Background
The MOBO Awards (Music of Black Origin, also known as the MOBOs) are an annual British music award presentation honouring achievements in "music of black origin", including hip hop, grime, R&B, soul, reggae, jazz, gospel, and African music.
The MOBO Organisation was founded by Kanya King and the inaugural awards were broadcast by Carlton Television from London's Connaught Rooms. Across its 22-year history, the MOBOs have been broadcast on Channel 4, BBC Television, ITV2 and on Channel 5 before returning to the BBC in 2020.
The challenge
Each year The MOBO Awards are known for high impact, creative performances, and stage designs. But after two years of no live performances, going back to a packed arena with guests and award nominees, required the best of the best.
Production design and lighting design by Suloko meant a lot of real estate for LED screens and creative content. With lots of stakeholders which inevitably happens with a live and broadcast event.
The solution
Our onsite creative team made up of Neil and Jamie, supported by technicians Charlie and Ben got together after having conversations with our longstanding friends over at Production Box.
AE pixelmaps and templates were sent to a variety of creative houses working for the individual artists. Our In-House Studio Team also got involved in creating the broadcast house looks and backing videos for two of the artists. For hardware we chose Green Hippo’s Boreal+’s controlled by a couple of the ever faithful grandMA2’s. With one of our 12G capable PPU’s onsite to handle all things cameras, trucks and timecode. The system worked flawlessly for both onsite and broadcast viewers.

Conclusion
Working with CC-Lab, The Manual, Production Box and Suloko to name a few is always a pleasure. The teamwork and sheer abundance of creative people brought together for this project was outstanding. Check out the Mobos on replay here
